LED surface mount lights are ideal for installation in a variety of locations. In this video, Mike, 911 Signal USA’s resident installation expert, is in the final stages of mounting 911 Signal USA surface mount lights on the door of our 2013 Dodge Charger. Watch carefully as Mike expertly installs a mounting bracket, and two separate LED lights on one mounting bracket.
Determine where the Window Mount Should Go
Mike wants to install the surface mount lights in a way that allows them to shine through the window when activated. To do this, Mike finds the ideal location on the inside of the rear door frame. Once Mike has found the right location, he grabs an LED surface mount light and rolls up the window of the Charger. By doing this, Mike is guaranteeing that the window and the LED lighting won’t clash when installed completely.
Mark Your Holes and Install Screws
Now, Mike is certain that he has chosen the right location for the door window mounting. To ensure he drills the right holes, Mike marks his holes with a permanent black marker. Next, Mike sets down the bracket and begins to drill holes with a power drill. With holes complete, Mike holds up the bracket to ensure he has drilled the right holes (0:53).
Use a Rivet Gun to Hold Bracket in Place
Since the door of a cruiser or any other vehicle will constantly be opening and closing, installers need to take care that this bracket will not fail. To ensure the bracket is secure, Mike uses a rivet gun to keep the bracket in place.
Install Surface Lights on Mounting Bracket
After the mounting bracket is properly secured to the door mount, Mike begins to install the surface mount lights on the bracket. When the lights are secured to the bracket, there will be excess screw hanging out of the back of the bracket.
Use Side Cuts and a Grinder to Remove Excess Screw
To remove the excess screw, Mike uses a pair of side cuts (2:43). However, after you cut off the screws, you will still be left with sharp edges. To eliminate the sharpness, Mike uses a sander to sand the screws down. To avoid causing more work for yourself, it is important to not cut or touch the wires of the surface mount lights while doing this. With this particular install, Mike holds the wires in one hand while he sands with the other. This helps to eliminate the risk of accidentally touching the wires with the sander.
Customize Protective Coverings
No one wants to see screws sticking out of the back of their install or yours either. To eliminate this, watch as Mike customizes plastic coverings to cover the back of the screw. This helps keep the emergency light in place and allows the mount to blend in well with the interior of the vehicle too.
Repeat Window Door Mount Installation on the Opposite Side of the Vehicle
With this type of installation, drivers usually choose to have the surface mount LEDs placed on both sides of the vehicle. To install LEDs on both sides of your vehicle, the same way we handled the install on the Charger, simply repeat the same steps above on the opposite side of the vehicle.
When watching this video, keep in mind that your install could be a bit different. This is true because our tech is installing our LED lights on a Dodge Charger. If you are installing these lights on a different vehicle make or model, your install could be a bit different.
